Helping the Caretakers: The Role of the Behavioral Health Consultant

  • Working alone or in conjunction with other professionals the mental health consultant assists caretakers in the process of understanding and caring for residents, especially those with psychiatric/behavioral problems. Extensive psychiatric clinical experience, education, and a collaborative style contribute to the efficacy of the role. It is important that front-line caretakers feel understood, supported, and valued by the consultant.
  • Types of help include:
    • Assisting with crisis management
    • Developing consistent models of care
    • The provision of ongoing support
    • The acknowledgement and management of caretaker grief
    • Identification of educational needs
  • Assisting direct caregivers requires a long-term care commitment from the mental health consultant to remain engaged and supportive as long as the problem lasts.
